Moving Through Institutional Change and Restructuring
Supporting Well-Being During Workplace Transitions
When unexpected events overwhelm our usual ways of coping, a range of emotional and practical challenges can arise. During a restructuring or reduction in force, the most visible impact is often on those whose positions are eliminated. But the effects ripple outward.
Those who remain may experience uncertainty, shifting roles, or increased workloads as teams adjust and responsibilities evolve. Leaders, navigating their own reactions, may be less available for guidance, leaving employees feeling unmoored or unsupported.
These responses are natural—and you're not alone. FEAP is here to help.
Grief and Restructuring
Major changes—like organizational restructuring—often bring a sense of loss, uncertainty, and emotional disruption. Even when not directly impacted, we may find ourselves grieving familiar routines, roles, or relationships.
Institutional shifts affect more than just our work; they ask us to adapt how we think, feel, and show up in our roles. These transitions can be difficult, but they’re also an opportunity to acknowledge what we’re experiencing and seek support when needed.
Coping with Change
The emotions you may be feeling right now—anger, fear, guilt, anxiety, or sadness—are completely normal. These are common responses in the wake of organizational change, especially after a restructuring. It may be helpful to keep the following in mind as you process these emotions.
For most, these feelings will ease over time. Talking with trusted friends, family, or supportive colleagues can help.
Restructuring is a form of loss—and like any loss, it can bring a process of grief.
You may notice heightened tension at work as others process their own reactions—this is also normal.
During this time, give yourself permission to step back and recharge. Even 15 minutes a day doing something you enjoy can help restore a sense of balance.
Remember: support is available. You don’t have to navigate this alone.
Supporting Your Team Through Change
In times of transition, leadership grounded in empathy and clarity can make a meaningful difference. Consider these key approaches:
Acknowledge the Reality
“This is a challenging time. I feel it too.” Naming the difficulty helps normalize the experience.Communicate with Compassion
Share updates clearly and consistently. Let your team know:
“I care about you. You matter. We’re committed to supporting you. Please reach out if you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed.”Create Moments of Connection
Check in with yourself and your team regularly. Encourage open dialogue and act on what you hear.Normalize Mental Health Conversations
Model vulnerability and reinforce that mental health is a shared priority—not a personal issue to manage alone.Offer Resources
Remind your team that they’re not alone. Direct them to FEAP, HR, Career Navigation, or leadership support.Lead with Gratitude
Genuine appreciation and a return to your team’s shared values can go a long way in restoring stability and trust.
